Wisconsin: WisDOT launches social media messages on the Move Over Law
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) launched a social media campaign on Monday, September 21, in an effort to increase compliance with the state’s Move Over Law.
The law requires drivers to move over or slow down when encountering law enforcement officers, highway maintenance crews, tow truck operators and others who work on the side of roads within a few feet of fast-moving traffic.
The new #MoveOver campaign will feature WisDOT Facebook videos of individuals who experienced first-hand the devastating effects of crashes involving Move Over Law violations:
• Wisconsin State Patrol Trooper James Reese, who narrowly escaped being hit by a semi that failed to move over on I-43 in Sheboygan County.
• Winnebago County Highway Commissioner Ernest Winters, whose highway department had two workers hit and killed by a vehicle while they were working on the side of US 41.
• Katie Walsh, whose husband, Nate, was struck and killed while working as a tow truck operator on I-94 near Osseo.
An animated video also explains clearly and concisely what the Move Over Law requires drivers to do in order to establish a safety zone for workers on the side of roadways. Facebook and Twitter users can take a short survey to help expand their awareness and understanding of the Move Over Law.
