Florida: FHP releases crash video to remind drivers of Move Over law

January is Move Over Law Awareness Month, and the Florida Highway Patrol is reminding drivers that it's the law to move over for emergency and service vehicles.  Troopers can show you better than they can tell you - that failing to slow down or yield for emergency and service vehicles can lead to near deadly consequences.

They released a video to drive the point home. It shows a crash involving a trooper and a vehicle that didn't follow the law. (Note: The video contains footage some viewers might find graphic.) For some of the more than 15 million licensed drivers in the state, flashing lights are a hint to approach with caution.

"It should be an understanding that they should just move over and get out of the way of the vehicles. They're trying to do a job," said Susan Dinnella.

The law isn't just limited to squad cars, but sanitation and service vehicles too.

In 2016 alone, more than 6,700 traffic crashes with injuries have been reported, one which included Trooper Mac Mickens.

That crash is highlighted in the FHP video. Mickens survived but suffered a shattered pelvis.

There are nearly 2,000 troopers like him patrolling the roads.

"Everybody with flashing lights, they're here to protect us, so it's our job to help them help us," said driver April Treacy.

If you can't move over, the law states drivers should slow down to 20 mph under the speed limit.
